About Karl Wiener

Karl Wiener was an Austrian painter, draughtsman and graphic artist, born in Graz in 1901, and he died in Vienna in 1949. He began studying art in 1924 at the Landeskunstschule in Graz, then moved to the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule (school of applied arts), where he studied under Bertold Löffler, and later took graphics under Rudolf Jettmar, graduating in 1932. He earned his living as a teacher and commercial graphic designer, and taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule from 1940 until he was dismissed in 1947.

Karl Wiener's work ranges from Expressionist paintings and posters to sharp pen drawings and political photomontage, images built from cut and pasted photographs. His themes include workers' lives, war, Nazi rule and inner distress. He never found a firm place in the art market, and much of his work stayed unseen for decades. His estate is held by the Wien Museum, which showed a major exhibition of it in 2011, and he has since been called the Austrian John Heartfield.

Karl Wiener prints: reproductions of the Expressionist paintings, posters and drawings the Austrian artist Karl Wiener made between 1919 and 1943. Works include Golgatha (Golgotha) (1923), Haus im Abend (House in the Evening) (1925), Vorstadtfrühling (Suburban Spring) (1929), Der Turm (The Tower) (1939) and Weibliches Porträt (Woman in a Red Sweater) (1943).

This selection covers Wiener's range: early poster and book designs for socialist and literary causes, sharp satirical drawings of social types, landscapes of Austria, and later portraits of women in strong reds, greens and blues. Many works use heavy outlines and simplified forms.

The bold colour portraits suit living rooms, studios and modern interiors, and the black-and-white drawings work well in a study or a group on one wall. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
