Six cyclists ride single file in silhouette across a golden plain

Six blue-grey silhouetted riders, among them a woman in a plumed hat and long skirt, pedal single file along a road banded in yellow, crossing a flat olive-green plain under a saturated golden-yellow sky. A low horizon carries a distant village with a church spire and a sailboat on the water. Bold lettering above names the Simplex bicycle works; vertical lettering at each side names the factory and Amsterdam.

Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig (1866–1915) was a Dutch painter and one of the artists who brought luminism to the Netherlands. Born in Amsterdam, he trained at the Kunstnijverheidsschool Quellinus and the Rijksakademie, and in Paris at the Académie Julian. He began in the impressionist manner of the Amsterdam School, but after a year in Paris in 1890 turned to pointillism under the influence of Van Gogh and Seurat, painting landscapes full of light and bright colour. He settled in Laren in Het Gooi and also worked on Vlieland and at Zoutelande. The Singer Museum in Laren has shown his work in a permanent Hart Nibbrig room since 1981.
