A rider in dark armor, his helmet visor open on a bare skull, gallops a black horse while a fair-haired woman in white clings behind him, her head thrown back. Sparks fly from the horse's hooves at the left, and other armored riders with lances move through the gloom behind. A fallen soldier in armor lies on the ground at the right, near a stone tomb overgrown with ivy.

Horace Vernet (1789–1863) was a French painter, born in the Louvre while his parents were living there during the Revolution, into a family of painters that included his father Carle Vernet and grandfather Claude-Joseph Vernet. Trained within this family workshop rather than through strict academic channels, he developed a lasting disdain for the high-minded seriousness of official French art. He specialized in military scenes depicting French soldiers in an informal, vernacular manner, and in Orientalist subjects drawn from his travels in North Africa, working with a productivity that made him one of the most popular painters of the July Monarchy. His paintings are held by the Louvre, the Palace of Versailles and the Wallace Collection.
