Blue Art Prints

Blue art prints: paintings, woodblock prints, posters and illustrations in which blue is a dominant colour. The largest group is Japanese shin-hanga woodblock prints by Kawase Hasui and Hiroshi Yoshida, showing lakes, snow, sea, night skies and mountains such as Mount Fuji, El Capitan and Moraine Lake, with works by Shoda Koho and Shiro Kasamatsu. Orientalist paintings by Jean-Léon Gérôme, Rudolf Ernst and Ludwig Deutsch feature blue tilework and robes. Symbolist works by Mikhail Vrubel, William Blake, James Ensor, Alphonse Osbert and Hilma af Klint are also included, along with Maxfield Parrish's Daybreak (1922), George Barbier fashion prints and colour studies after Josef Albers.

A woman in a blue-green robe patterned with gold stands in profile to the left, eyes closed, breathing in the scent of a pink rose she holds to her face. Her other hand rests on the wall among the rose stems. Her auburn hair is gathered at the nape and threaded with pearls. Behind her a tiled wall leads to a white building with arched openings under a red roof, dark trees rise at the upper left, and a terracotta pot stands on a ledge at the right.

John William Waterhouse (1849–1917) was an English painter working in a Pre-Raphaelite and classical Symbolist style. Born in Rome to English painter parents, he trained at the Royal Academy Schools from 1871 and exhibited at the Royal Academy's summer show almost every year from 1874 to 1916, becoming a full Academician in 1895. He painted subjects from mythology and Arthurian and Tennysonian literature, including three versions of The Lady of Shalott and Hylas and the Nymphs (1896). His paintings are held by Tate, Manchester Art Gallery and Leeds Art Gallery.
