About Gustave Doré

Paul-Gustave Doré was a French illustrator, painter and sculptor, born in Strasbourg in 1832 and died in Paris in 1883. He moved to Paris as a teenager in 1847 and, while still in his mid-teens, began drawing weekly caricatures for the comic paper Le Journal pour rire. He soon turned to illustrating books, the work that made him famous.

Gustave Doré is best known for his dramatic, highly detailed book illustrations, full of deep shadows, vast crowds and towering landscapes. He drew the designs, and a workshop of more than forty craftsmen cut them into wooden blocks for printing, which let his pictures reach huge audiences. He illustrated more than ninety books, among them Rabelais (1854), Dante's Inferno in the early 1860s, Don Quixote (1863), a large illustrated Bible (1866) and Milton's Paradise Lost (1866). His London: A Pilgrimage (1872) showed the city's rich and poor alike, and a gallery devoted to his work opened in London.

Gustave Doré prints: reproductions of the wood engravings, etchings and paintings French illustrator Gustave Doré made between 1860 and 1883. Works in the collection include Death on the Pale Horse (1865), The Walls of Jericho Falling Down (1866), Paradiso, Canto XXXI: The Celestial Rose (1871), Gargantua on the Towers of Notre-Dame (1873) and Puss in Boots: The Marquis of Carabas Is Drowning (1862).

This selection concentrates on Doré's book illustrations in black and white. It includes many of his plates for Dante's Purgatorio and Paradiso, his Bible scenes, his comic giants from Rabelais's Gargantua and Pantagruel, and his drawings for Perrault's fairy tales, including Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Bluebeard. It also includes a smaller group of his paintings of Highland and Spanish landscapes and religious subjects.

The engravings suit studies, libraries, hallways and reading rooms, and look good hung in rows; the fairy-tale plates work well in children's rooms. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
