Mountains Art Prints
Mountain art prints: woodblock prints, paintings, posters and etchings of mountains, peaks and alpine scenery. Artists include Hiroshi Yoshida (shin-hanga woodblock prints of El Capitan, Mount Rainier, the Wetterhorn, Moraine Lake and Mount Fuji, 1920s), Kawase Hasui and Shiro Kasamatsu (Mount Fuji), Caspar David Friedrich (Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog, around 1818), and Emil Cardinaux (Swiss travel posters of Zermatt, the Matterhorn, Davos and the Jungfrau Railway, 1905–1928).

The sheer granite face of El Capitan fills the sheet, lit pale cream and apricot, with a rim of rust and pink where the light catches the summit against a clear blue sky. Tall dark firs stand in front of the right half of the cliff, and below them a still blue-green pool reflects the trees beside a lilac-grey sandbar. Yoshida made the design after travelling through the United States, and it belongs to his six-print United States series of 1925, the first set of designs he produced in his own Tokyo studio after leaving the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō.
The original: a colour woodblock print, 1925, signed in pencil and bearing Yoshida's jizuri ("self-printed") seal, which marked impressions printed in his own studio. Impressions are held by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin.
Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) trained as a painter in Western-style oils and watercolour before turning to woodblock prints. After working briefly with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō in 1920–22, he set up his own studio, employing highly trained carvers and printers while supervising every stage himself. Over his career he produced 259 print designs.
