Pieter Bruegel the Elder Prints

About Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Pieter Bruegel the Elder was a Flemish painter and printmaker, born around 1525, probably in or near Breda, and died in Brussels in September 1569. He became a master in the Antwerp painters' guild in 1551–52, then travelled through Italy as far as Sicily, spending time in Rome in 1553. Back in Antwerp he designed many prints for the publisher Hieronymus Cock. In 1563 he married Mayken Coecke and moved to Brussels.

Bruegel is loved for his crowded, sharp-eyed scenes of village life, which earned him the nickname "Peasant Bruegel", and for landscapes that make people feel small inside the turning seasons. In 1565 he painted a series of the seasons for the Antwerp collector Niclaes Jongelinck. Two of the survivors are among the most famous paintings in Europe: The Harvesters, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and Hunters in the Snow, at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Pieter Bruegel the Elder is buried in the Brussels church of Notre-Dame de la Chapelle, where he was married.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder prints: reproductions of the Flemish Renaissance paintings and engravings Pieter Bruegel the Elder made between 1558 and 1568. The collection includes Hunters in the Snow (1565), Peasant Wedding (1568), The Tower of Babel (1563), Netherlandish Proverbs (1559) and Children's Games (1560).

This selection covers the main strands of his work: the 1565 seasons series, including The Return of the Herd, Gloomy Day and The Hay Harvest; crowded village scenes such as Peasant Dance and The Fight between Carnival and Lent; and biblical subjects set in Flemish villages, such as The Census at Bethlehem. A few engravings, including The Last Judgment and a fleet of galleys, show his work as a print designer.

The busy, detailed scenes suit dining rooms, living rooms and studies, where people have time to look closely, and the winter landscapes work well in hallways and kitchens. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
