Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) was the defining visual chronicler of Montmartre's golden age — its cabarets, dance halls, brothels, and performers immortalised in posters, lithographs, and paintings of extraordinary vivacity. His radical cropping, flat planes of colour, and psychologically penetrating character studies transformed poster art into high art and made him one of the great graphic innovators of the 19th century.
