Two pierced hands, two pierced feet and a wounded heart float in a golden disc ringed with pink and blue light, as six angels in white, blue and green pray in the sky around it. Below, a crowd kneels on a green slope and looks up: a pope in a jewelled tiara, a cardinal, a bishop, two crowned kings, a man in armour, a nun, a woman in blue, a friar in a brown habit and men in red and blue with joined hands.
The miniature closes the prayer book made for Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg. After the sorrowful Passion scenes that precede it, it ends the book on a more hopeful note with an unusual version of the Second Coming, in which Christ's wounds become objects of reverence and awe rather than of sorrow.
The original: a leaf from the Prayer Book of Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg, painted in tempera colours, gold paint and gold leaf in Bruges about 1525–1530. It is held by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
Simon Bening (about 1483–1561) was a Flemish illuminator who trained in Ghent in the workshop of his father, Alexander Bening, and by 1500 had moved to Bruges, where he served several times as dean of the guild of illuminators and booksellers. He made books of hours for Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg, Emperor Charles V and Don Fernando, Infante of Portugal, carrying on the Flemish gift for soft nocturnal light and adding poetic landscape views; his eldest daughter, Livinia, became court painter to Edward VI of England. His work is held by the J. Paul Getty Museum.

What paper do you use?
Our principal fine-art papers include
Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and
Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308gsm.
German Etching has a substantial, lightly textured surface that works
exceptionally well for paintings and richly coloured works. Photo Rag
has a smoother cotton surface suited to graphic, modernist and highly
detailed imagery.
Paper is selected according to the character of the artwork rather than
using one generic stock for everything. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
What does “giclée” mean?
Giclée is a fine-art printing process using archival pigment inks and
high-resolution inkjet printing, made to reproduce subtle colour gradations,
fine detail and tonal depth.
Will large prints still look sharp?
Large-format reproduction depends heavily on the quality of the underlying
artwork file. We source the highest-resolution material available and
prepare each image for print rather than simply enlarging a small internet image.
That is especially important with historic paintings, posters and archival
works where source quality varies considerably.
What about your framed prints?
Our framed pieces use solid-wood frames, handmade to order, with low-reflection glazing. There is no mount: the print fills the frame. Framed prints are printed on 200gsm matte fine-art paper.
Will the colours look exactly like my screen?
Screens emit light; paper reflects it, so no physical print can be identical
to every monitor or phone display. We prepare our artwork specifically for
print and aim for accurate colour, contrast and tonal reproduction.
The texture and surface of fine-art paper also give the finished piece
a physical depth that cannot be shown completely on a screen.
