Wild geese cross a full moon above Takanawa's shore
Utagawa Hiroshige — Full Moon over Takanawa | Japanese Woodblock Print (Ukiyo-e)
Note: Framed prints require slightly longer production time
A skein of wild geese banks low across a full moon rising over Edo Bay at Takanawa, the sky streaked with coral-red evening clouds above a deep blue sea. Moored junks with furled sails cluster at left along the curving shoreline, where notice boards on tall posts stand along the embankment; low hills fade into the distance beyond the bay. The scene is bordered by a key-fret pattern frame, with the title cartouche 'Famous Places in the Eastern Capital: Full Moon over Takanawa' and the artist's signature at right. Dated to around 1831, this early Hiroshige print pairs migrating geese with a moonlit Edo coastal view.
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was the last great master of the ukiyo-e landscape print. Born into a family of fire wardens in Edo, he turned to printmaking under Utagawa Toyohiro and found his subject in the roads and seasons of Japan — above all in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (1833–34) and the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–58). His snow, rain and evening skies, and his bold near-and-far compositions, were studied closely by Van Gogh, Whistler and Monet. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
