A pale green jug holds a dense bouquet of white daisies, red poppies, blue cornflowers and rust-orange asters, the flowers clustered densely against a background that shifts from teal-grey at the left to near-black at the right. In the foreground, a loose drift of full pink roses lies scattered across the table in front of the vase, mixed with a few more white daisies and red blooms. The signature 'Vincent' is inscribed in gold at the upper right.
Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
