A woman with reddish-gold hair pulled back sits in a red chair, her hands loosely clasped in her lap around a length of pale rope, a ring visible on one finger. She wears a dark green jacket over an emerald-green skirt and looks down and to the side with a calm expression. Behind her, a densely patterned wallpaper of dark blue-green with gold dots and large white daisy-like blossoms fills the background. Thick, directional brushstrokes build the entire canvas.

The original: an oil on canvas, 92.7 x 73.8 cm, painted in 1889, is held by the Art Institute of Chicago.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) painted for barely ten years and produced some 2,100 works, most of them in the last two. After early dark canvases of Dutch peasant life he moved to Paris in 1886, absorbed Impressionism and Japanese prints, and in Arles and Saint-Rémy arrived at the thick, directional brushwork and saturated colour that carry his sunflowers, cypresses and night skies. He sold almost nothing in his lifetime. His paintings are held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
