Adriaen van Ostade Prints

About Adriaen van Ostade

Adriaen van Ostade was a Dutch painter and etcher, born in Haarlem in 1610. He probably trained with Frans Hals, but the stronger early influence on his work came from Adriaen Brouwer, and from about 1640 he took up Rembrandt's handling of light and shade. He joined the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke in 1634 and served as its dean in 1662. His recorded pupils include his younger brother Isack van Ostade and Jan Steen. He died in Haarlem in 1685.

Van Ostade is known for genre scenes of Dutch peasant life, many set in dimly lit inns and cottages, and he made about 50 etchings. His key works include The Schoolmaster (1662), held at the Louvre in Paris, and The Fishwife (1672), held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Adriaen van Ostade prints: reproductions of 17th-century Dutch genre scenes of peasant and village life by Adriaen van Ostade. The collection includes Slaughtered Pig in a Barn (1643), The Painter's Studio (1647), The Quacksalver (1648), The Fishwife (1672) and The Fiddler (1673).

Our selection follows everyday work and leisure in a Dutch town: a baker sounding his horn, fish sellers and their customers, a lawyer at his desk, a painter at work, a quack doctor selling remedies, and drinkers and merrymakers at the inn. The pictures span three decades of his career, from the barn interiors of the 1640s to the open-air doorway and street scenes of the 1670s.

The tavern and market scenes suit kitchens, dining rooms and studies. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
