About Albert Guillaume

Albert Guillaume (1873–1942) was a French caricaturist, illustrator, poster artist and painter. He was born in Paris, the son of the architect Edmond Guillaume, and studied briefly in the studio of the painter Jean-Léon Gérôme. He exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon des Humoristes, and won a bronze medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. He died in 1942 in Faux, in the Dordogne.

Guillaume drew satirical scenes of Parisian society for Gil Blas, Le Rire and Le Figaro illustré, and designed theatre and advertising posters. Key works include the poster Gil Blas: Transformation du Gil Blas (1896), held by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and a frieze of seven hunting scenes painted for the dining room of the Hôtel du Grand Cerf in Senlis, which opened in 1911. The frieze is now in the Senlis museums, and the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University also holds his work.

Albert Guillaume prints: reproductions of the French posters he designed from the 1890s onward for Paris theatres, music halls and advertisers. The collection includes Ambigu-Comique: Gigolette (1894), Peugeot, Succès Sans Précédent (1895), Folies-Bergère: Lona Barrison (1896), Ambassadeurs: Duclerc (1898) and À la Scala (1903).

Our selection focuses on his stage and café-concert posters for the Ambigu-Comique, the Ambassadeurs, the Folies-Bergère and La Scala, along with later advertising posters for Cirage Végétal Parfumé (1914) and Haig whisky in Spirit of Haig: Great Scot! (1928). The posters show performers and fashionable Parisians in bold colour, with the humour of his press caricatures.

The theatre posters suit living rooms, hallways and home bars, and the Peugeot and Haig designs fit a study or kitchen. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
