Alberto Pasini Prints

About Alberto Pasini

Alberto Pasini (1826–1899) was an Italian painter and printmaker, born in Busseto, near Parma, on 3 September 1826. He studied landscape at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Parma, then moved to Paris in the early 1850s, where he worked in the studio of Théodore Chassériau and exhibited at the Salon from 1853. In 1855 he travelled to Persia as the artist of a French diplomatic mission, and he later travelled to Egypt and made long stays in Constantinople. In 1870 he settled at Cavoretto, near Turin, where he died on 15 December 1899.

Pasini is known as one of the leading Italian Orientalist painters, recording the markets, mosques, caravans and horsemen of the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East in clear light and fine detail. Key works include Market in Constantinople (1868) in the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, and A Mosque (1886) in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Alberto Pasini prints: reproductions of nineteenth-century Italian Orientalist paintings of Istanbul, Persia, Egypt and the desert. The collection includes The Ruins of Persepolis (1856), A Ferry on the Nile (1861), On the Golden Horn (1876), In the Marketplace, Istanbul (1881) and A Mosque (1886).

Our selection follows his travels: caravans and encampments from his early journeys, and the bazaars, mosques, fountains and porticoes of Istanbul that became his main subject. Many scenes place riders and traders against sunlit walls and doorways, painted in warm stone colours under bright sky.

The city and mosque scenes suit living rooms, entryways and studies, and the desert caravans work well above a sofa or bed. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
