About Alexander Zelensky

Alexander Nikolaevich Zelensky (1882–1942) was a Russian and Soviet poster artist, born in Astrakhan on the Volga. From 1901 to 1904 he studied at the Stroganov School of art and industrial design in Moscow. He is remembered as one of the founders of the Soviet advertising poster and as part of the Leningrad school of poster design.

During the Civil War Zelensky made political posters calling workers, peasants and sailors to defend Soviet power, many of them in 1918. In 1922 he became chief artist of the Petrograd tobacco trust, and his cigarette posters of the 1920s, such as those for the Pushki and Safo brands, are now counted as Constructivist design, a style built on bold geometry and strong lettering. In 1929 he moved to Moscow and worked for the food trust Mosselprom, later turning toward Socialist Realism. He died in 1942 in Yoshkar-Ola, where he had been evacuated during the Second World War.

Alexander Zelensky prints: reproductions of the Soviet propaganda, advertising and film posters Alexander Zelensky designed in Petrograd and Leningrad between 1918 and 1926. The collection includes Comrades! To Arms for Soviet Power (1918), Comrade Sailors! Forward for the Great Gains of the October Revolution! (1918), To Have More, We Must Produce More (1920), Trade and Industrial Leningrad (1925) and the film poster The Overcoat (1926).

This selection centres on the revolutionary posters of 1918, with their slogans and calls to workers, peasants and sailors. It also shows Zelensky's move in the 1920s toward advertising and cinema, with an industrial poster for Leningrad and a poster for the silent film The Overcoat.

The bold slogans and graphic layouts suit a study, home office or hallway, or a room with modern furniture. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
