About Alexandre Cabanel

Alexandre Cabanel (1823–1889) was a French painter, born in Montpellier and died in Paris. He moved to Paris at the end of 1839 to join the studio of François-Édouard Picot and entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1840. In 1845 he won the Prix de Rome for painting and spent the following years at the Villa Medici in Rome.

Cabanel is known for mythological, biblical and historical subjects and for portraits. His second submission from Rome, The Fallen Angel (1847), is held by the Musée Fabre in Montpellier. The Birth of Venus caused a sensation at the Salon of 1863 and was bought by Napoleon III; that version is now in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. A smaller replica of 1875 is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Alexandre Cabanel prints: reproductions of the 19th-century French academic paintings of myth, the Bible and history. The collection includes The Birth of Venus (1875), The Fallen Angel (1847), Cleopatra Testing Poisons on Condemned Prisoners (1887), Pandora (1873) and Echo (1874).

Our selection focuses on single figures from classical myth and the Old and New Testaments, including Psyché (1881), Phaedra (1880), The Death of Moses (1850) and Mary Magdalene at the Tomb (1875). Renaissance subjects such as Florentine Poet (1861) and Young Page in Florentine Garb (1881) add Italian costume scenes. Pale figures against dark or sea-blue grounds recur across the set.

The single-figure works suit bedrooms, living rooms and studies. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
