About Alfred Choubrac

Alfred Choubrac was a French draughtsman, poster designer and theatre costume designer. He was born in 1853 and worked in Paris, where he died in 1902. He designed colour lithographic posters for Paris music halls, theatres, publishers and brands, and many of his designs were printed by the Paris lithographer F. Appel.

Choubrac is known for posters of music-hall performers and stage productions of the 1880s and 1890s. His posters for the Folies-Bergère, including Ballet des Perles, and for the Alcazar d'Été, including E. Fougère, advertised ballets and individual performers. His 1891 poster for the illustrated journal Fin de Siècle was censored, and the printed sheet carries a note that part of the drawing was prohibited. He also produced drawn designs for theatre costumes. His work is held by the Musée Carnavalet in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the MAK in Vienna and the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University.

Alfred Choubrac prints: reproductions of the French Belle Époque posters he designed for Paris music halls, theatres and newspapers between 1885 and 1898. The collection includes Paola del Monte (White Veil) (1890), Folies-Bergère: La Tortajada (1890), Alcazar d'Hiver (1890), Ohé! Ohé! On Va Ouvrir (1897) and Le Petit Bleu de Paris (1898).

Our selection centres on his posters of named music-hall performers, including Lyse Berty, Ellen Willa, Jane Dhénin at the Trianon-Concert and Estrella del Moral, alongside posters for the Alcazar d'Été, the Théâtre du Châtelet production of Don Quichotte and the Fête du Lion de Belfort. Together they record the performers, venues and fashions of the Paris stage in the 1880s and 1890s.

These posters suit living rooms, bedrooms, dressing rooms and home bars. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
