About Alfred Sisley

Alfred Sisley was a landscape painter and one of the founders of French Impressionism. He was born in Paris on 30 October 1839 to wealthy English parents and remained a British citizen all his life, though he lived almost entirely in France. In 1862 he joined the Paris studio of Charles Gleyre, where he met Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Frédéric Bazille. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71 ruined his family's business, and Sisley lived with money worries for the rest of his life.

Sisley painted almost nothing but landscapes: rivers, villages, roads and snow, in soft tones and a gentle palette. Through the 1870s he worked in the villages west of Paris, such as Louveciennes, Marly and Bougival, and showed at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. Key works include View of the Canal Saint-Martin, Paris (1870) and Regatta at Molesey (1874), both in the Musée d'Orsay. In 1880 he settled near Moret-sur-Loing, where he died on 29 January 1899. His reputation and prices rose soon after his death.

Alfred Sisley prints: reproductions of the Impressionist landscapes Alfred Sisley painted around Paris and Moret-sur-Loing between 1872 and 1897. The collection includes Flood at Port-Marly (1872), First Snow at Veneux-Nadon (1878), The Road from Versailles to Louveciennes (1879), A Corner of Moret-sur-Loing (1895) and The Loire (1896).

This selection follows the places where Sisley lived and worked: the Seine at Bougival, Port-Marly and Argenteuil in the 1870s, then the Loing canal, Saint-Mammès and the streets of Moret in his later years. Rivers, bridges and country roads appear again and again, along with a few winter scenes. Most share his pale blue skies and soft greens.

The light skies and calm water suit living rooms, bedrooms and sunlit hallways, and the wider river views work well above a sofa or bed. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
