Alphonse Mucha Prints

About Alphonse Mucha

Alphonse Mucha was a Czech painter and designer, born on 24 July 1860 in Ivančice, in Moravia, then part of the Austrian Empire. He studied art in Munich and Paris in the 1880s, enrolling at the Académie Julian in Paris in 1888. His big break came at the end of 1894, when he designed a poster for the actress Sarah Bernhardt's play Gismonda. It appeared in Paris in January 1895 and made his name. He died in Prague on 14 July 1939.

Alphonse Mucha became the leading poster artist of Art Nouveau, the turn-of-the-century style of flowing, natural lines. His posters and decorative panels show graceful women framed by flowers, swirling hair and circular halos. The Seasons (1896) is a well-known early series. Later he returned home and painted The Slav Epic, twenty huge canvases on the history of the Slavic peoples, and designed banknotes and stamps for the new state of Czechoslovakia.

Alphonse Mucha prints: reproductions of the posters, decorative panels and designs Alphonse Mucha made between 1894 and 1926. The collection includes Gismonda (1894), Job (1898), La Plume (1899), The Ruby (1900) and Étoile du Matin (1902).

This selection concentrates on Mucha's Paris years: theatre posters for Sarah Bernhardt, advertisements for biscuits, chocolate, cycles and cigarette papers, magazine covers, and decorative panels of women framed by flowers, stars and halos. It also includes his stained-glass designs for the Fouquet jewellery shop, pages of abstract floral designs, and later Czech posters from 1913 and 1926.

The soft pastels and flowing lines suit bedrooms, dressing rooms, living rooms and entryways, and the panels from one series hang well as a set. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
