Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) became the defining voice of Art Nouveau after his landmark 1895 poster of Sarah Bernhardt made him overnight famous across Paris. His signature style — sinuous lines, radiant halos, and women adorned with botanical ornament — became so synonymous with the era that the French called the movement "le style Mucha." Beyond commercial posters, Mucha devoted his deepest energies to the Slav Epic, a cycle of monumental canvases celebrating Slavic history. No artist better captured the fin de siècle longing for beauty, harmony, and myth.
