Andrea Mantegna Prints

About Andrea Mantegna

Andrea Mantegna (about 1431–1506) was an Italian painter, born at Isola di Carturo near Padua. He trained in Padua with Francesco Squarcione and won his first major commission in 1448, frescoes for a chapel in the Eremitani church in Padua. In 1453 he married Nicolosia, daughter of the Venetian painter Jacopo Bellini. From 1460 Mantegna served the Gonzaga family in Mantua as court artist, was knighted by 1484, a rare honour for a painter, and died in Mantua on 13 September 1506.

Mantegna was fascinated by ancient Rome, and his figures often look as solid as carved stone, set in sharply foreshortened space, meaning bodies are drawn as if seen from a steep angle. In Mantua he painted the Camera degli Sposi, a frescoed room in the ducal castle finished around 1474. His Lamentation over the Dead Christ, seen from the soles of the feet, is in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, and his nine large canvases The Triumphs of Caesar are at Hampton Court Palace in England.

Andrea Mantegna prints: reproductions of paintings by the Italian early Renaissance painter Andrea Mantegna, made between 1448 and about 1500. The collection includes St Mark the Evangelist (1448), The Presentation (1454), Parnassus (1496), Christ as the Suffering Redeemer (1495) and Adoration of the Magi (1500).

Most of this selection is religious: the Holy Family, the Madonna and Child with saints, the Magi and Christ, often shown as close half-length figures pressed to the front of the picture. It also includes a portrait of Cardinal Ludovico Trevisano and Parnassus, a mythological scene of the Muses dancing. The figures are firm and sculptural, in muted reds, golds and stone colours.

The compact devotional panels suit studies, bedrooms and hallways; Parnassus, with its dancing figures and landscape, works well in a living room. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
