August Macke Prints

About August Macke

August Macke (1887–1914) was a German painter born in Meschede, Westphalia. He studied at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1904 to 1906 and briefly with Lovis Corinth in Berlin. Trips to Paris introduced him to the Impressionists and then to Henri Matisse, and through Franz Marc he met Wassily Kandinsky and joined Der Blaue Reiter in 1911. He lived in Bonn from 1911, in a house that is now the August Macke Haus museum. He was killed in action in Champagne, France, in September 1914, aged 27.

Macke preferred people to the animals Marc loved: strolling couples, shop windows, parks, cafés and hats, all in clear, joyful colour. After meeting Robert Delaunay in 1912 he began breaking scenes into planes of colour. In 1914 he travelled to Tunisia with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet, and the watercolours he made there are among his most admired works. Key paintings include Lady in a Green Jacket (1913), in the Museum Ludwig, Cologne, and Turkish Café (1914), in the Lenbachhaus, Munich.

August Macke prints: reproductions of Expressionist paintings and watercolours by the German painter August Macke, made between 1910 and 1914. The collection includes Tegernsee Landscape (1910), Flowers in the Garden, Clivia and Pelargoniums (1911), Milliner's Shop (1913), Turkish Cafe (1914) and St Germain near Tunis (1914).

This selection covers Macke's last five years: Bavarian landscapes from Tegernsee, garden flowers, a zoo, a street scene, a promenade and a milliner's shop, and the watercolours from his 1914 trip to Tunisia. Most works use clear, bright colour laid in flat areas, with people shown at leisure.

The bright colour and everyday subjects suit living rooms, kitchens and dining rooms, and the smaller watercolours work well in a hallway or a gallery wall. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
