Berthe Morisot Prints

About Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot was a French painter and one of the founding members of the Impressionist group. She was born in Bourges on 14 January 1841 and died in Paris on 2 March 1895. She trained privately and from the early 1860s worked under the landscape painter Camille Corot, who encouraged her to paint outdoors. She first showed at the official Paris Salon in 1864, and in 1874 she married Eugène Manet, the brother of the painter Édouard Manet. Their daughter Julie was born in 1878.

Morisot painted private, everyday life: women at home, mothers and children, gardens and harbours, often with her sister Edma or her daughter as models. She worked in oil, watercolour and pastel with quick, loose brushwork, often leaving edges unfinished. She took part in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 and most of those that followed. Key works include The Harbor at Lorient (1869), now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and The Cradle (1872), in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Berthe Morisot prints: reproductions of the Impressionist paintings Berthe Morisot made in France between 1864 and 1894. The collection includes The Harbor at Lorient (1869), Reading (1873), Hanging the Laundry out to Dry (1875), Self-Portrait (1885) and Girl in a Boat with Geese (1889).

This selection centres on Morisot's portraits of women and girls at home and outdoors: her sister Edma at a window or on a bench, her daughter with a parakeet, young women knitting, reading or dressing. A smaller group of landscapes, from the harbour at Lorient to the forest of Compiègne, shows her outdoor work. Most are in pale, airy colours with light, open brushwork.

The soft palettes suit bedrooms, dressing rooms, living rooms and reading corners. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
