Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) was a Dutch painter and founder of Neoplasticism — a radical reduction of painting to horizontal and vertical lines, primary colours (red, yellow, blue), and neutrals. Co-founder of the De Stijl movement with Theo van Doesburg, he believed pure abstraction could express universal harmony. His late works — Broadway Boogie Woogie, New York City, Trafalgar Square — created in New York after his escape from wartime Europe, introduced jazz rhythm into his grid and remain among the most collected works of 20th-century modernism.
