About the Bundi School
Bundi painting is a school of Rajasthani miniature painting from the princely state of Bundi, in present-day Rajasthan, and its neighbour Kota (Kotah). The earliest examples date from about 1625; the school was at its best in the first half of the 18th century and continued into the 19th. Mughal influence was unusually strong in early Bundi work, and because the rulers of Bundi and Kota were often in contact with the Deccan, their painting shares something of Deccani richness and brilliance.
Bundi painters are known for lush vegetation, dramatic night skies, water shown as light swirls on a dark ground, and lively movement. Like other Rajasthani schools, they painted the legends of Krishna and Radha, ragamala series (pictures of musical modes) and types of heroine, and later more court life and hunting scenes. Such paintings were kept in albums or boxes and passed from hand to hand rather than hung on walls.
Bundi school prints: reproductions of Rajasthani miniature paintings made at Bundi between the late 17th and late 18th centuries. The collection includes Krishna Fluting (1675), Krishna and Radha Quarreling, from a Rasikapriya (1680), Royal Women Feeding Fish (1740), Lovers Embracing (Raga Malkaus) (1760) and Radha and Krishna in the Rain (1780).
This selection centres on Krishna and Radha and on scenes of love, with a ragamala page, and adds court women at leisure and Vishnu and Lakshmi riding Garuda. It also includes an unusual page from a Punishment series. Water and weather recur, as in the rain scene and the women feeding fish.
