About Camille Pissarro

Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French painter, born on 10 July 1830 on the Caribbean island of Saint Thomas, then Danish, and died in Paris on 13 November 1903. He moved to Paris in 1855 and learned from the landscape painter Camille Corot. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71 he lived in London, where he met the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel. In 1872 he settled in Pontoise, outside Paris, and later moved to the village of Éragny.

Pissarro was a founder of Impressionism and the only artist to show at all eight Impressionist exhibitions, from 1874 to 1886. He painted farms, fields, village roads and country people, and for a few years in the 1880s tried the dotted technique of Georges Seurat. In his last years he painted series of Paris boulevards and the port of Rouen seen from hotel windows. He taught and encouraged younger artists, including Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. His work is held by the Musée d'Orsay, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Camille Pissarro prints: reproductions of the paintings Camille Pissarro made between 1856 and 1899, from the Caribbean to Pontoise, Éragny, London, Rouen and Paris. The collection includes A Creek in St. Thomas (1856), The Crystal Palace (1871), The Lock at Pontoise (1872), The Boulevard Montmartre on a Winter Morning (1897) and The Garden of the Tuileries on a Spring Morning (1899).

This selection follows Pissarro's whole career: early Caribbean scenes, the gardens and river at Pontoise in the 1870s, farm work and peasant women at Éragny, and the late city views of Paris boulevards, the Tuileries and the port of Rouen. Seasons and times of day are named in many titles, showing his interest in changing light and weather.

The rural scenes suit kitchens, dining rooms and bedrooms, and the Paris boulevards work well in a living room, hallway or office. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
