About Caravaggio

Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio after his family's home town in Lombardy, was an Italian painter born on September 29, 1571, in Milan or Caravaggio, and he died on July 18, 1610, at Porto Ercole in Tuscany. He trained in Milan with the painter Simone Peterzano and moved to Rome around 1592, where he struggled at first, selling still lifes of fruit and flowers and half-length figures. In 1595 Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte took him into his household, and public commissions followed.

Caravaggio painted saints and biblical figures from ordinary people on the street, lit by strong light out of deep shadow, a method called tenebrism. His paintings of Saint Matthew for the Contarelli Chapel in Rome, including The Calling of Saint Matthew (1599 to 1600), made him famous. His life was violent: in 1606 he killed a man in a brawl and fled Rome, moving between Naples, Sicily and Malta, where he painted The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist (1608). His style influenced Rubens, Velázquez and Rembrandt, and a whole generation of followers known as the Caravaggisti.

Caravaggio prints: reproductions of the paintings of Caravaggio, the Italian Baroque painter, made between about 1593 and 1610. The collection includes Young Sick Bacchus (1593), The Fortune Teller (1596), The Musicians (1597), Supper at Emmaus (1601), Sacrifice of Isaac (1603) and The Entombment of Christ (1603).

This selection covers both halves of Caravaggio's career. The early Roman works show young musicians, card players, fortune tellers and Bacchus, painted close up and lit against plain backgrounds. The later works are religious scenes, among them the Supper at Emmaus, the Crucifixion of Saint Peter and Saint Jerome Writing, in which strong light comes out of deep shadow. Most canvases are dark-toned with warm flesh and red.

The dark grounds and warm light suit dining rooms, libraries, studies and living rooms with deep wall colors, and the larger religious scenes work well as a single focal piece above a fireplace or sideboard. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
