About Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) was a German painter, born in Greifswald on the Baltic coast of Pomerania. He studied at the Copenhagen Academy in the 1790s and in 1798 settled in Dresden, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life, moving in a circle of Romantic writers and artists. He died in Dresden in 1840.

Friedrich is the great landscape painter of German Romanticism. His landscapes and seascapes are vast, still and mysterious, and set small human figures against the immense forces of nature. The Monk by the Sea (1808–1810), shown in Berlin in 1810, made his name, and Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (around 1817–1818), in the Hamburger Kunsthalle, is among the best-known images of the period. His reputation faded after his death and was revived in the twentieth century.

Caspar David Friedrich prints: reproductions of German Romantic paintings by Caspar David Friedrich. The collection includes Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog (1818), Two Men Contemplating the Moon (1819) and View from the Artist's Studio.

This selection focuses on Friedrich's figures seen from behind, looking out: a walker on a rocky peak above fog, two men watching the moon rise through bare branches, and the view through his studio window in Dresden. Each picture is quiet and still, with muted greys, browns and soft blues, and invites the viewer to look out with the figures.

The muted palettes suit studies, libraries, bedrooms and hallways, and Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog works well as a single piece above a desk, sofa or bed. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
