About Dust Muhammad
Dust Muhammad was a Persian painter of the sixteenth century, trained in Herat, in present-day Afghanistan, and called the best pupil of the master painter Bihzad by a writer of the period. He worked in the royal workshop of Shah Tahmasp at Tabriz. Parts of his life are debated, partly because several men named Dust Muhammad were active at the time, including a well-known calligrapher. One leading account says he left Iran in the late 1530s for Kabul, joined the Mughal emperor Humayun, and died in India around 1560.
The paintings given to Dust Muhammad are unsigned and attributed by style, so the prints in this collection are labeled "attributed." The Metropolitan Museum of Art credits him with several pages of the Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp painted around 1530 to 1535, including Bahram Gur Before His Father, Yazdigird I. Begun in the early 1520s, the manuscript holds 258 paintings by many hands. It was sent to the Ottoman sultan Selim II as a gift in 1568, and its pages are now divided among many collections, with 78 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Dust Muhammad prints: reproductions of Persian miniature paintings from the Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp, made around 1530 and attributed to the Safavid court painter Dust Muhammad. The collection includes Bahram Gur Before His Father, Yazdigird I, Nushirvan Greets the Khaqan's Daughter and The Coup against Usurper Shah.
This selection focuses on the later, historical part of the Book of Kings, which covers the Sasanian kings of Persia. Two pages are court scenes: a prince presented to his father and a royal bride received by King Nushirvan. The third shows a palace coup, full of movement. Each page has detailed architecture, tilework and costume.
The court scenes suit living rooms, dining rooms and studies, and the three pages hang well as a row above a sofa or sideboard. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
