E. A. Séguy Prints

About E. A. Séguy

E. A. Séguy was a French designer working in Paris in the first decades of the twentieth century. Little is recorded about his life, and even his names and dates vary between sources: the Metropolitan Museum of Art lists him as Emile-Allain Séguy (1877–1951), while other collections give Eugène Alain Séguy and different dates. What is certain is his output: a series of design portfolios published in Paris from around 1900 to 1930.

Séguy's albums were made with pochoir, a hand-stencilling process in which each colour is brushed on through its own cut stencil, giving rich, flat colour. He began with floral patterns in an Art Nouveau spirit and moved towards Art Deco. He is best known today for Papillons (1920), plates of butterflies, and Insectes (1929), arrangements of beetles and other insects. Suggestions pour étoffes et tapis (1923), designs for fabrics and carpets, is in the collection of the Met.

E. A. Séguy prints: reproductions of Art Deco pattern designs by the French designer E. A. Séguy, from his pochoir portfolio Samarkande, published in Paris in 1920. The collection includes Samarkande, Plate 1, Plate 3, Plate 9, Plate 15 and Plate 17.

This selection concentrates on a single portfolio, so the plates share one design language: repeating patterns of stylised flowers, leaves and geometric shapes in flat, saturated colour. Most plates are bold and dense, while a few, such as Plate 10, are lighter and calmer. Because they come from the same set, the plates are designed to sit together.

The strong patterns suit entryways, dining rooms, offices and Art Deco interiors, and several plates hung in a grid work well on a large wall. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
