Edward Burne-Jones Prints

About Edward Burne-Jones

Edward Burne-Jones was an English painter and designer, born in Birmingham on 28 August 1833 and died in London on 17 June 1898. He went to Exeter College, Oxford, to study theology, and there met William Morris, who became his lifelong friend. After meeting the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti in 1856 he left Oxford without a degree to become an artist. He became a partner in Morris's decorative arts firm, later Morris & Co., and was made a baronet in 1894.

Burne-Jones painted scenes from myth, medieval legend and the Bible, with tall, dreamy figures in a style drawn from early Italian painters such as Botticelli. His show at London's Grosvenor Gallery in 1877, which included The Beguiling of Merlin, made him a leading figure of the Aesthetic Movement. Other key works include King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid (1884) and the Briar Rose series. He also designed stained glass, tapestries and the illustrations for the Kelmscott Chaucer (1896). Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery holds the largest collection of his work.

Edward Burne-Jones prints: reproductions of the paintings, watercolours and designs English Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones made between 1865 and the 1890s. The collection includes Astrologia (1865), Cupid Finding Psyche Asleep by a Fountain (1872), The Wheel of Fortune (1875), Perseus and Andromeda (1876) and the four-part Pygmalion and the Image series (1878).

This selection centres on Burne-Jones's stories told in series: Pygmalion and the Image, the tale of Cupid and Psyche, and scenes from the Briar Rose legend. It also includes several designs from The Flower Book, each named after a flower, and a family portrait of his wife Georgiana with their children. Most share his muted blues, greens and golds.

The quiet palettes and literary subjects suit bedrooms, libraries, studies and reading corners, and the series panels can be hung as a group along a hallway or above a bed. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
