Félix Vallotton Prints

About Félix Vallotton

Félix Vallotton (1865–1925) was a Swiss-born painter and printmaker, born in Lausanne. He moved to Paris in 1882 and, though accepted by the École des Beaux-Arts, chose to study at the Académie Julian instead. From 1892 he exhibited with the Nabis, a group of young painters including Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, though he always kept a little apart and was nicknamed "the foreign Nabi". He became a French citizen in 1900 and died in Paris in 1925.

Vallotton is celebrated above all for his woodcuts: bold masses of black and white with almost no detail, which critics credit with reviving the medium in the 1890s. His series Intimités (1898), ten woodcuts of tense moments between couples, appeared in the magazine La Revue blanche. His paintings share the same flat colour and hard edges, as in Bathers on a Summer Evening (1892–1893). During the First World War he made the anti-war woodcut series C'est la guerre! (1915).

Félix Vallotton prints: reproductions of paintings by the Swiss-born painter Félix Vallotton, made between 1887 and 1925. The collection includes Still Life with Pitcher (1887), Baigneuse aux roseaux (1895), Marthe Mellot (Mme Natanson) (1906), La Blanche et la Noire (1913) and Romanian Woman in a Red Dress (1925).

This selection concentrates on Vallotton's paintings of women: portraits, bathers, sleeping and reclining figures, and women in red dresses or a blue shawl. A single early still life completes it. The pictures share smooth surfaces, flat areas of strong colour and clear, hard outlines, with a cool, observed mood.

The strong reds and calm figures suit living rooms, bedrooms and studies, and the larger reclining figures work above a bed or sofa. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
