About Frans Hals

Frans Hals (1582/83–1666) was a Dutch portrait painter, born in Antwerp, who worked for almost his whole life in Haarlem. He was apprenticed to the painter and writer Karel van Mander from 1601 to 1603 and joined the Haarlem painters' guild in 1610. He is thought to have met Rubens when the Flemish painter visited Haarlem in 1624. Frans Hals died in Haarlem in August 1666, in his eighties.

Hals is known for portraits that feel caught in a passing moment: sitters laugh, lean and glance sideways, painted with fast, visible brushstrokes. He also painted large group portraits of Haarlem's civic guard companies and of the governors of its almshouses. His breakthrough was The Banquet of the Officers of the St George Militia Company (1616). The Laughing Cavalier (1624) is in the Wallace Collection in London, and several of his most important group portraits hang in the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. His loose brushwork later influenced Édouard Manet.

Frans Hals prints: reproductions of portraits and genre paintings by the Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals, made in Haarlem between 1616 and 1645. The collection includes The Laughing Cavalier (1624), Peeckelhaering (1628), Merrymakers at Shrovetide (1616), Malle Babbe (1640) and The Meagre Company (1637).

This selection leans towards Hals's cheerful pictures: drinkers, musicians, laughing boys, a fisherboy and couples at an inn, painted with quick, loose brushwork. It also includes formal portraits of Haarlem citizens and civic guard members, a portrait of a married couple, and the large militia group known as The Meagre Company. Blacks, whites and warm browns dominate, with flashes of red and gold.

The lively genre scenes suit kitchens, dining rooms and bars; the formal black-and-white portraits work in studies, offices and hallways. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
