Frans Snyders Prints

About Frans Snyders

Frans Snyders (1579–1657) was a Flemish Baroque painter of animals and still lifes, born in Antwerp. He studied with Pieter Brueghel the Younger and became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1602. In 1608–1609 he travelled to Rome and then Milan, where Cardinal Federico Borromeo supported his work, and he returned to Antwerp in 1609. In 1611 he married Margaretha de Vos, sister of the painters Cornelis and Paul de Vos. He died in Antwerp in 1657.

Snyders is known for large market and pantry still lifes piled with fish, fruit and game, often with live animals among them, and for hunting scenes and animal fights. From around 1610 he worked closely with Peter Paul Rubens, painting the animals, game and fruit in many of Rubens's pictures. His Four Market Scenes, large canvases of game, fruit, vegetable and fish stalls, are in the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.

Frans Snyders prints: reproductions of the Flemish Baroque painter's market scenes, still lifes and animal pictures. The collection includes At the Fishmonger's (1625), Still Life with Grapes and Game (1630), Boar Hunt, Fighting Cocks and The Fox Visiting the Heron.

Our selection covers his three main subjects: market and kitchen still lifes heavy with fish, fruit and game, a dramatic hunting scene, and animal fables and fights. The pictures share dark backgrounds, rich browns and reds, and closely observed fur, feathers and scales.

The still lifes suit kitchens and dining rooms, and the hunting and animal scenes work well in studies, libraries and living rooms. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
