About Frederic Leighton

Frederic Leighton (1830–1896) was an English painter and sculptor, born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, on 3 December 1830. He trained on the Continent, in Germany, Italy and France, and studied in Frankfurt under Eduard von Steinle. He was knighted in 1878 and served as President of the Royal Academy from 1878 until his death on 25 January 1896. In 1896 he became the first painter to be given a peerage, as Lord Leighton.

Leighton is known for paintings of classical myth, the Bible and literature, and for the bronze sculpture Athlete Wrestling with a Python. His first painting shown at the Royal Academy, Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna (1855), was bought by Queen Victoria on the exhibition's opening day. Later key works include Perseus and Andromeda (1891) and Flaming June (1895). His home in Holland Park, London, is now the Leighton House Museum.

Frederic Leighton prints: reproductions of the Victorian paintings of classical myth, the Bible and literature by the English painter and President of the Royal Academy. The collection includes Flaming June (1895), Golden Hours (1864), Captive Andromache (1888), Cymon and Iphigenia (1884) and The Return of Persephone (1891).

Our selection focuses on Greek myth, women in classical dress and scenes from Shakespeare and the Old Testament. It runs from early works such as Cimabue's Madonna Carried in Procession (1855) and The Reconciliation of the Montagues and the Capulets (1854) to late single figures like Solitude (1890) and 'Twixt Hope and Fear (1895). Warm orange, gold and deep blue drapery recurs across the set.

The single-figure works suit bedrooms and living rooms, and the larger narrative scenes suit dining rooms and studies. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
