About Frederick Arthur Bridgman

Frederick Arthur Bridgman was an American painter, born in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1847 and died in Rouen, France, in 1928. His family moved to New York, where he worked as a banknote engraver for the American Bank Note Company while studying at the Brooklyn Art Association and the National Academy of Design. In 1866 he went to Paris to study with Jean-Léon Gérôme, and he made France his permanent home, spending summers with American artists at Pont-Aven in Brittany.

Between 1872 and 1874 Bridgman travelled in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt and made about 300 sketches, which fed decades of paintings of North African street life, courtyards and terraces, and scenes of ancient Egypt. His Funeral of a Mummy on the Nile (1876–77), bought by the newspaper owner James Gordon Bennett Jr., helped earn him the Legion of Honour. He also wrote and illustrated the book Winters in Algeria (1889) and was a keen composer and musician.

Frederick Arthur Bridgman prints: reproductions of paintings by the American Orientalist Frederick Arthur Bridgman, made between the 1870s and 1920. The collection includes A Cairo Street (1878), Cafe at Biskra, Algeria (1884), The Procession of the Bull Apis (1879), In the Souk, Algiers (The Market Square) (1880) and The Orange Seller (1920).

This selection focuses on Algeria and Egypt: Algiers markets, terraces and verandas, café and chess scenes in Biskra, and processions, including the sacred bull Apis of ancient Egypt. A second thread is quiet domestic interiors such as The Peacock Fan (1876), Idle Moments (1875) and A Precious Jewel (1874). Most of the scenes are calm and unhurried.

The calm street and terrace scenes suit living rooms, bedrooms and sunrooms, and the interiors fit studies and reading corners. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
