About George Barbier

George Barbier was a French illustrator and designer, born in Nantes in 1882 and died in Paris in 1932. After early studies in Nantes he entered the studio of the painter Jean-Paul Laurens at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A show of around ninety of his drawings at a Paris gallery in 1911 first brought him public attention, and he became one of the leading graphic artists of the years that led into Art Deco.

Barbier is best known for his fashion plates: elegant, flat-coloured scenes of dress and manners drawn for magazines such as the Gazette du Bon Ton, to which he also contributed writing, and the Journal des Dames et des Modes. He drew clothes by Paul Poiret and other couturiers, illustrated books by writers including Verlaine, Pierre Louÿs and Baudelaire, and produced the yearly almanac Falbalas et Fanfreluches in the mid-1920s. George Barbier also designed costumes and sets for the stage, including the Folies Bergère, along with fabrics, fans and wallpaper.

This selection concentrates on Barbier's fashion plates of evening gowns, coats and day dresses, many by the couture houses Worth, Redfern and Beer, set in gardens, terraces and interiors. It also includes his drawings of the dancers Nijinsky and Karsavina, his theatre costume designs and his 1925 plates of the seasons. The flat colour and fine line keep each scene clear and easy to read from across a room.

The romantic and playful scenes suit bedrooms, dressing rooms and hallways, and several plates together work well as a gallery wall. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
