George Bellows Prints

About George Bellows

George Bellows was an American painter and printmaker, born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1882. After Ohio State University he moved to New York in 1904 to study under Robert Henri, leader of the realist group known as The Eight. Bellows became closely linked with the Ashcan School, artists who painted everyday city life rather than polished society scenes. He taught at the Art Students League, helped organise the 1913 Armory Show, and died in New York in 1925, aged just 42.

Bellows painted New York at full volume: crowded streets, boys swimming in the East River in Forty-Two Kids (1907), and the vast pit dug for Pennsylvania Station. He is best remembered for his boxing pictures, above all Stag at Sharkey's (1909), now at the Cleveland Museum of Art, set in a private club at a time when public prizefights were illegal in New York. He also painted Maine seascapes and tender portraits such as My Mother (1921), and made nearly 200 lithographs.

George Bellows prints: reproductions of paintings by the American realist painter George Bellows, made between 1907 and 1924. The collection includes Club Night (1907), New York (1911), Love of Winter (1914), Evening Blue (1916) and Dempsey and Firpo (1924).

This selection covers the main sides of Bellows's work. Club Night and Dempsey and Firpo are boxing scenes, packed with crowds and lit from above. New York shows a busy Manhattan street with traffic and pedestrians, and Love of Winter shows skaters on a frozen pond. Evening Blue is a quieter landscape in deep blues. Across the set, the brushwork is broad and fast and the subjects are taken from everyday American life.

The boxing and city scenes suit offices, dens, studies and home gyms; Evening Blue and Love of Winter fit more easily in living rooms and bedrooms. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
