About Georges de La Tour

Georges de La Tour (1593–1652) was a French painter from the Duchy of Lorraine in eastern France. He was baptised on 14 March 1593 in Vic-sur-Seille, and from 1620 he lived in Lunéville. By 1639 he held the title Painter in Ordinary to King Louis XIII, and the king and Cardinal Richelieu both owned his work. He died in Lunéville on 30 January 1652.

La Tour is best known for quiet night scenes lit by a single candle, where faces and hands glow out of deep shadow. His early pictures show the influence of Caravaggio; later his compositions became stiller and simpler. Key works include The Cheat with the Ace of Clubs (late 1620s) at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, a version with the Ace of Diamonds in the Louvre, and The Repentant Magdalene (about 1635–40) at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. After his death Georges de La Tour was forgotten, and his identity as an artist was only rediscovered in 1916.

Georges de La Tour prints: reproductions of paintings by the French Baroque painter Georges de La Tour, made in Lorraine in the 1620s and 1630s. The collection includes The Cheat with the Ace of Clubs (1630), The Fortune-Teller (1630), The Magdalen with the Smoking Flame (1635), St. Thomas (1624) and The Musicians' Brawl.

This selection covers both sides of his work. One is his daylight scenes of card cheats, fortune-tellers and quarrelling street musicians. The other is his quiet religious pictures of penitent saints, including two pictures of Mary Magdalene and one of Saint Jerome. The candlelit works set warm reds and ochres against deep black shadow.

The dark, candlelit paintings suit studies, libraries, bedrooms and dining rooms lit in the evening; the card-game scenes work well in a living room or games room. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
