About Georgia O'Keeffe
Georgia O'Keeffe was an American painter, born on 15 November 1887 near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League in New York, and her work changed after she studied with the teacher Arthur Wesley Dow. In 1916 the photographer and gallery owner Alfred Stieglitz first exhibited her work, and the two married in 1924. She first visited northern New Mexico in 1929 and settled there for good in 1949. She died in Santa Fe on 6 March 1986, aged 98.
Georgia O'Keeffe is best known for large close-up paintings of flowers, which she was making by the mid-1920s, as well as the skyscrapers of New York and, later, bones, hills and desert landscapes of New Mexico. Cow's Skull: Red, White, and Blue (1931), at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, shows a bleached skull as a symbol of the desert's lasting beauty.
