About Henri-Edmond Cross
Henri-Edmond Cross (1856–1910) was a French painter born Henri-Edmond Delacroix in Douai, in northern France. He changed his name to avoid confusion with the famous Eugène Delacroix. He trained in Lille and then in Paris, and in 1884 helped found the Société des Artistes Indépendants, an exhibition society with no jury, where he met Georges Seurat. Rheumatism drove him south in 1891, first to Cabasson and then to the hamlet of Saint-Clair on the Mediterranean coast, where he lived until his death.
Cross was a leading figure in Neo-Impressionism, which builds a picture from separate touches of pure colour. His first large painting in this manner, a portrait of his wife, dates from 1891. With his friend Paul Signac, who settled nearby at Saint-Tropez, he moved to broader, mosaic-like strokes, painting sea views, country scenes and bathers. Henri Matisse visited him there, and Cross's late work helped shape Fauvism. His paintings are held by the Musée d'Orsay and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
