About Henri Martin
Henri Martin was a French painter, born in Toulouse in 1860, the son of a cabinetmaker, and died in 1943 at Labastide-du-Vert in the Lot. He studied at the art school in Toulouse and from 1879 in Paris under the painter Jean-Paul Laurens, then travelled to Italy to study early Renaissance painters such as Giotto, a trip that turned him towards poetic, dreamlike subjects.
Henri Martin began in the circle of Symbolism and then developed his own form of divisionism, building light and form from short, separate, parallel strokes of colour, a looser cousin of the dots of Seurat and the Neo-Impressionists. He painted many large public murals, including works for the Capitole in Toulouse, the Sorbonne, the Hôtel de Ville in Paris and the Conseil d'État in the Palais-Royal (1914–22). Settled at Labastide-du-Vert near Cahors, he painted its bridge, church and surrounding countryside again and again. The Musée des Augustins in Toulouse and the museum in Cahors that bears his name hold large collections.

It also includes harbour scenes at Collioure, harvest and vineyard workers, flower still lifes, a few Paris and Venice views, and his earlier Symbolist paintings of muses and poets.
