About Henrique Alvim Corrêa

Henrique Alvim Corrêa was a Brazilian painter, draughtsman and illustrator, born on 30 January 1876 in Rio de Janeiro. In 1892, after Brazil became a republic, his royalist stepfather took him to Europe. In Paris he studied with Édouard Detaille, a painter of military scenes, then in Jean Jacques Brunet's studio, and showed work at the Paris Salon. Around 1900 he settled in Brussels, setting up a studio with his own printing press in Watermael-Boitsfort. He died of tuberculosis in Brussels on 7 July 1910, aged 34.

Alvim Corrêa is best remembered for his illustrations for H. G. Wells's novel The War of the Worlds. He drew them in 1903, Wells approved them, and they were published in 1906 in a deluxe French edition of 500 copies. His dark, dreamlike Martian machines are often linked to Symbolism, the movement that favoured mood, mystery and inner vision over realism. He also drew many war scenes. Henrique Alvim Corrêa's work was largely forgotten in Brazil until the 1960s.

Henrique Alvim Corrêa prints: reproductions of the illustrations Henrique Alvim Corrêa drew for H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds, published in the 1906 French edition. The collection includes Martian in the Forest, Martian Machine Over the Thames, Martians Attack, Abandoned London and the Vandamme edition poster, all from 1906.

This selection follows the story from start to finish: the falling star and the Martians' arrival, the tripod fighting machines and handlers attacking towns and crowds, the abandoned city, and the dead Martians at the end. The drawings are mostly in black, grey and sepia ink with dense hatching and smoke. Taken together, they read as a sequence and can be grouped by chapter.

The dark monochrome drawings suit studies, libraries, home offices and media rooms, and a row of three or four works well along a hallway. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
