About Hieronymus Bosch

Hieronymus Bosch was a Netherlandish painter, born Jheronimus van Aken around 1450 in 's-Hertogenbosch, the town that gave him his name, and died there in 1516. The exact year of his birth is not known. He came from a family of painters, with his grandfather and father both working in the trade, and he spent nearly all his life in his home town, where he was a member of a religious confraternity, the Brotherhood of Our Lady.

Bosch is famous for crowded, dreamlike scenes full of strange creatures, hybrid monsters and tiny figures, often carrying moral and biblical warnings. His best-known work, the triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights (around 1495–1505), moves from paradise through earthly pleasure to a nightmarish hell. It hangs in the Prado in Madrid, along with The Haywain, because King Philip II of Spain collected his paintings. Only around 25 paintings are confidently given to him today. Hieronymus Bosch influenced Pieter Bruegel, and centuries later the Surrealists claimed him as a forerunner.

Hieronymus Bosch prints: reproductions of the Early Netherlandish paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, made around 1475 to 1516, along with a few later engravings after his designs. The collection includes The Garden of Earthly Delights, the panels of The Haywain Triptych, Ship of Fools (around 1500), Death and the Miser (around 1485) and The Extraction of the Stone of Madness.

This selection concentrates on his moral and religious subjects: paradise and hell, human folly, greed, and the suffering of Christ in works such as Christ Mocked and Ecce Homo. Many pictures are crowded with small figures, hybrid creatures and strange buildings. Works dated around 1560, such as the engraving The Blue Boat, show how his imagery spread after his death.

The dense, detailed panels suit studies, libraries and living rooms where they can be seen up close, and the single triptych wings work well in narrow spaces such as hallways. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
