Jacob Jordaens Prints

About Jacob Jordaens

Jacob Jordaens (1593–1678) was a Flemish Baroque painter, born in Antwerp. He trained under Adam van Noort, who had also taught Peter Paul Rubens, and in 1615 he became a master in the Antwerp painters' Guild of St. Luke. In 1616 he married his teacher's daughter, Catharina van Noort. He collaborated with Rubens on several large commissions, and late in life he converted to Calvinism. He died in Antwerp in 1678.

Jordaens is known for crowded, warmly coloured scenes of Flemish family feasts, proverbs, satyrs and peasants, painted with strong light and robust figures, as well as portraits and religious and mythological works. His best-known subjects include The King Drinks, the Twelfth Night feast he painted in several versions, The Satyr and the Peasant, and As the Old Sing, So the Young Pipe. For the Orange Hall of the Huis ten Bosch palace in The Hague he painted the large Triumph of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange.

Jacob Jordaens prints: reproductions of paintings by the Flemish Baroque artist, from family feasts and satyrs to history paintings and portraits. The collection includes The Feast of the Bean King (1640), As the Old Sing, So the Young Pipe (1638), King Candaules of Lydia Showing His Wife to Gyges (1646) and Triumph of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange (1652).

Our selection brings together his lively group scenes, mythological studies such as Old Satyr Holding a Flute (1620) and Head of a Faun, the biblical Jesus Driving the Merchants from the Temple (1647), and formal portraits including Portrait of Rogier Le Witer and Portrait of Magdalena de Cuyper (both 1635). The paintings share warm reds, golden flesh tones and full, busy compositions.

The feast scenes suit dining rooms and kitchens, while the portraits and satyr studies work well in studies, hallways and living rooms. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
