About Jacob van Ruisdael

Jacob van Ruisdael was a Dutch landscape painter, born in Haarlem in 1628 or 1629. His father, Isaack van Ruisdael, and his uncle, Salomon van Ruysdael, were both painters, and his earliest dated works are from 1646. He joined the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke in 1648 and moved to Amsterdam in the later 1650s, where he lived for the rest of his life. Meindert Hobbema was his pupil. Ruisdael died in Amsterdam in 1682 and was buried in Haarlem.

Ruisdael painted almost every type of Dutch landscape, including dunes, woodland, waterfalls and panoramic views of Haarlem, and he also made etchings and drawings. His key works include The Jewish Cemetery (about 1654 to 1655), held at the Detroit Institute of Arts, with a second version in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, and The Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede (about 1668 to 1670), held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Jacob van Ruisdael prints: reproductions of landscapes by the 17th-century Dutch painter Jacob van Ruisdael. The collection includes The Jewish Cemetery (1654), The Great Forest (1655), The Windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede (1668), Winter Landscape near Haarlem (1670) and View of Haarlem from the Northwest, with the Bleaching Fields in the Foreground.

Our selection covers the range of his subjects: the castles and ruins of Egmond, Bentheim and Huis ter Kleef, forests and a great oak, watermills and sluices, wheat fields, dunes, rough seas off a jetty, and the coast and waterfall of his Norwegian views. Many of the scenes are set around Haarlem and Alkmaar, and most give a large part of the picture to clouded sky.

The open skies and countryside suit living rooms, studies and bedrooms, and the sea pieces fit hallways and coastal homes. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
