About John Bauer

John Bauer was a Swedish painter and illustrator, born in Jönköping on 4 June 1882. He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1900 to 1905, and in 1906 married Ester Ellqvist, a fellow student. His life ended tragically on the night of 19–20 November 1918, when the steamer Per Brahe sank in a storm on Lake Vättern, drowning Bauer, Ester and their young son.

Bauer is best known for the trolls, gnomes and princesses he painted for Bland tomtar och troll (Among Gnomes and Trolls), a Christmas anthology of Swedish fairy tales that he illustrated almost every year from 1907 to 1915. These books sold well and made him Sweden's best-known fairy-tale illustrator. Before that, in 1904, he spent a month in Lapland painting watercolours for a book about the region. The Jönköping County Museum holds more than a thousand of his works, the largest collection anywhere, and John Bauer still shapes how many people picture a Scandinavian fairy-tale forest.

John Bauer prints: reproductions of the Swedish fairy-tale illustrations John Bauer painted in the early 1900s, many for the Christmas annual Among Gnomes and Trolls. The collection includes The Princess and the Trolls, Brother St. Martin and the Three Trolls, Vill Vallareman (a Fairy Shepherd), Brownie by a Fireplace (1909) and Two Trolls (1909).

This selection focuses on his trolls and the people who meet them: princesses, shepherds, boys and old men in dark Swedish forests. The pictures are painted in muted greens, browns and greys, with tall trees, mossy ground and soft light. A few, such as Brownie by a Fireplace and Old Man Talking to a Boy, are indoor or quieter scenes.

The muted forest colours suit children's rooms, bedrooms, reading nooks and cabins, and a pair of troll scenes hangs well side by side. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
