About John Constable

John Constable was an English landscape painter, born on 11 June 1776 in East Bergholt, Suffolk, and he died in London on 31 March 1837. His father, Golding Constable, was a corn merchant who owned Flatford Mill. Constable entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1799 and was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1829. The Suffolk countryside of his childhood, including the family's mill at Flatford on the River Stour, gave him his main subject.

John Constable painted rivers, mills, meadows, skies and weather, working from close observation. Key works include The White Horse (1819), The Hay Wain (1821) and Hadleigh Castle (1829). The Hay Wain won a gold medal at the Paris Salon of 1824. He also worked with the engraver David Lucas on a series of mezzotint prints of his landscapes, published as English Landscape. The Hay Wain and The Cornfield hang today in the National Gallery in London.

John Constable prints: reproductions of paintings, mezzotints and etchings after the English landscape painter John Constable, dating from 1816 to 1855. Works include The White Horse (1818), Wivenhoe Park, Essex (1816), Hampstead Heath, Looking Toward Harrow (1821), Salisbury Cathedral from Lower Marsh Close (1820) and Hadleigh Castle: Large Plate (1830).

This selection pairs Constable's oil landscapes with the mezzotints made from his work for the English Landscape series, including Spring, A Summerland and Summer Afternoon, After a Shower. The subjects are the English countryside he knew: the River Stour and its locks, Hampstead Heath, Salisbury Cathedral, mills and open heath under changing skies.

The green and grey country scenes suit kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms, and the dark mezzotints look well framed together in a study or along a hallway. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
