About John Everett Millais

John Everett Millais was an English painter, born in Southampton on 8 June 1829 and died in London on 13 August 1896. His family moved to London in 1838, and he entered the Royal Academy Schools at around eleven, an astonishing age, going on to win all its prizes. In 1848 he co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, a group of young artists who rejected the polished academic painting of their day.

Millais's early pictures are known for close, truthful detail. Christ in the House of His Parents (1850) shocked critics, Charles Dickens among them, by showing the Holy Family as ordinary working people. Ophelia (1851–52), the drowning heroine from Hamlet floating among flowers, became one of the best-loved Pre-Raphaelite paintings and hangs at Tate Britain. The Blind Girl (1856) was another public success. Later John Everett Millais turned to portraits, including Gladstone and Tennyson. He was made a baronet in 1885 and elected president of the Royal Academy in 1896, the year he died.

John Everett Millais prints: reproductions of paintings by John Everett Millais, from his Pre-Raphaelite years to his later portraits, dated 1846 to 1892. The collection includes Ophelia (1851), Lorenzo and Isabella (1849), The Blind Girl (1856), The Rescue (1855) and Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind (1892).

This selection mixes his detailed early narrative scenes with the portraits and genre pictures of his later career. Portraits of women and children recur, including Dorothy Lawson, Kate Perugini and Charlie Is My Darling, alongside literary subjects such as Portia, Clarissa and The Martyr of the Solway. A few landscapes with figures, such as Spring Time and Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind, show his later outdoor work.

The portraits suit living rooms, dining rooms and studies, and the softer landscapes and child subjects work in bedrooms and hallways. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
